The Greater Kokstad Municipality pledges transparency as the SIU expands its investigation into procurement practices.
Facing a broadened inquiry, the Greater Kokstad Local Municipality has reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and good governance, pledging full cooperation with the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) after President Cyril Ramaphosa signed an amendment to Proclamation 244 of 2025.
This has significantly expanded the SIU’s investigation into the municipality to include additional procurement bids and extending the investigation’s reach back to June 2020.
SIU spokesperson Selby Makgotho said the amendment relates to the procurement of software licences and information technology (IT) service desk solutions at the municipality in KwaZulu-Natal.
He explained that the original proclamation, published on January 31, 2025, authorised the SIU to investigate the procurement of, or contracting for, goods, works, or services by or on behalf of the municipality, and any payments made in a manner that was not fair, equitable, transparent, competitive or cost-effective.
