Taiwan’s stock market just had one of those days that makes risk managers lose sleep. The benchmark TAIEX index plummeted 2,953.71 points on July 17/18, a 6.47% nosedive that closed the index at 42,671.27. That’s the largest single-day point loss in the index’s entire history.

The margin call heard across Taipei

On July 18, margin loans across the Taiwanese market dropped by roughly $896 million, or NT$27.6 billion. That single-day decline was the steepest since April 2025.

Outstanding margin debt fell 7% from its historic peak, bringing the total down to $18.2 billion.

The weekly damage wasn’t much prettier. The TAIEX shed 5.92% over the course of the week.
