Some of the challenges will be to ensure smaller players have access to NATO too
NATO allies typically endorse a declaration at the end of a leaders’ summit, but in Ankara, they also approved a separate document aimed at boosting the alliance’s engagement with arms makers.
This year’s summit placed unprecedented emphasis on the defence industry, with leaders and CEOs announcing a series of deals and partnerships. The new strategy aims to give industry greater insight into allied capability needs to ramp up production.
The strategy has three objectives: to increase communication between NATO bodies and the defence industry, to advance innovation and interoperability, and to scale and sustain production.
NATO will share an “aggregated demand signal” based on the NATO Defence Planning Process (NDPP) to update the industry on NATO’s needs, the strategy reads. The NDPP is NATO’s process for identifying needed military assets.
