Authorities hope that an analysis of several photos, in combination with new information from an “anonymous” e-mail plus witness testimony, will this time lead to convictions for the terrorist attack on Marfin Bank in central Athens on May 5, 2010.
In that attack on the bank, three bank employees, one pregnant, lost their lives, overcome from the smoke that resulted from the fire caused by firebombs and a gasoline can thrown into the bank.
Police already possessed a number of photos shot by journalist Ilias Provopoulos at the scene; more photos were discovered years after the attack during a raid by the police counterterrorism division looking for explosives.
Authorities say the new photos show two of the three arrested suspects, now aged 42, on summer holiday, their faces uncovered. They also claim that two backpacks shown in the holiday photos are identical to those carried by two of the bank attackers, based on some similarities – a rusted zip on one and the logo of punk rock band Dead Kennedys on the other.
In analyzing both batches of photos, experts at the Criminal Investigations Division concluded in their report that there was an “ironclad” connection between the two individuals allegedly shown in both sets. The report does not make the same conclusion about the woman, now aged 46, arrested in the United Kingdom after a Greek extradition request.
