Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya recently apologised to Hammanskraal residents for delays in providing them with clean and drinkable water during her oversight visit to the Rooiwal wastewater treatment plant and Klipdrift water package plant.
The residents of Hammanskraal, in the City of Tshwane, have expressed overwhelming support for the newly launched National Water Access Acceleration Programme. The initiative, led by President Cyril Ramaphosa and Minister of Water and Sanitation Pemmy Majodina, was unveiled on Saturday to coincide with events commemorating Mandela Day.
The initiative involves the rollout of 67 boreholes and the commissioning of the Klipdrift Water Treatment Plant to improve water supply in a township that has faced persistent water challenges in recent years. Residents of Hammanskraal have long complained about the quality of their water, an issue that worsened after the deadly cholera outbreak in 2023, which claimed dozens of lives. The newly launched programme is aimed at delivering practical, sustainable and fit-for-purpose water solutions to rural and historically underserved communities.
Speaking during the launch, Ramaphosa said that the programme will help resolve the longstanding water crisis in the area, saying: "We have now elevated water as the top priority in our government system. We have set up a committee, and this is one committee that I am working alongside all the stakeholders. Having done the package, I am pleased to hear that we are now going ahead with the reticulation of water into the taps and the homes of our people."
