As his eldest child eyes up a career in the spotlight, JLS star JB Gill says he and his 11-year-old son Ace have had some “honest” conversations about life in the public eye.“He’s got a CV better than most actors at professional level,” laughs JB, when we ask if Ace is showing any signs of following in his footsteps. “Who knows what the future’s going to hold. He loves it, and it definitely comes very naturally to him.”JB, who also has daughter Chiara, seven, with his choreographer wife Chloe, adds, “They both do voiceover work and Ace has acted in dramas. Perhaps that’s what he’ll go into in the future. But he’s also keen on football. He plays for an academy. Chiara is just starting her sporting journey, but she loves her sport, too.”‌The singer-turned-TV presenter adds, “It’s early days, but we’re incredibly proud of them for what they’re achieving. It’s incredible that at their age they’re already doing it. If I think back to myself at 11, I wasn’t doing half of what Ace is doing. I think that bodes well for his future.”JB, now 39, became a household name in 2008 when he competed on the fifth season of The X Factor with bandmates Aston Merrygold, Marvin Humes and Oritsé Williams. At just 21, his life changed dramatically after the four-piece impressed judges Simon Cowell, Dannii Minogue, Louis Walsh and Cheryl Tweedy – finishing as runners-up to Alexandra Burke.Their music career went from strength to strength. The group scored No1 hits with Everybody In Love, The Club Is Alive and She Makes Me Wanna.JB also found love on The X Factor when he fell for backing dancer Chloe. The couple made the huge decision to leave city life behind and move to a farm in Kent. They then tied the knot in 2014, welcoming son Ace later that year, before adding to their brood with daughter Chiara in 2018.‌Ever since, they have regularly shared adorable glimpses into their adventures on social media, while also proudly showing off the latest achievements of their talented little ones.It may be almost two decades since JB shot to fame with his pals, but he and Chloe are well-versed in the inner workings of the industry. And as young Ace prepares to leave primary school, JB says they sat him down to discuss the nitty gritty of the industry he seems to be leaning towards.“We’re very open and honest with Ace. He plays football to a very high level and that’s his main love,” JB says. “You see in the media, I’m sure you’ll know first-hand how some of them can be treated and the reception that they get if they have a bad game, a bad season or even a bad spell. We believe honesty is the best policy. Same with his acting work.”Clearly a very proud dad, he adds, “He’s very protected, and probably in the best family for it, because both Chloe and I come from that industry. We know what it’s like, we’ve experienced it first-hand, so we’re able to impart some of that knowledge and also protect him from it, until he’s able to handle it himself.”‌They have also broached the murky topic of social media when you become a well-known figure. JB explains, “We talk to Ace about the conversations that he has with friends, and what it’s like if people film him and potentially that goes on the wrong platforms. Those are all discussions happening now.“I know there’s lots of debate about the social media ban for under-16s. Things like that are hot topics in our house because he has got friends who’ve got phones and are able to go on various different platforms, or games, and communicate with the public.“It’s important to have those conversations because sooner or later, someone’s going to teach him, and we would much prefer it to be us rather than a peer who has a lot less experience than we do, or somebody else outside the family.“We’re continually adapting. Each stage of life, especially with the children, is different. When we didn’t have any kids, we were learning to live together and do what we were doing together, separately and as husband and wife.”‌Seeing their eldest ready to start secondary in September has been an emotional ride. JB admits, “It’s crazy because as far as I’m concerned, he literally just started the other day. It’s flown by. Everything everybody tells you is true – you’ve got to cherish those moments because they’ll be gone in a heartbeat.”Away from music, the dad-of-two has developed a huge passion for food, and he whipped up some dreamy dishes on Celebrity MasterChef in 2014. He also opened the doors to the farm for two seasons of the award-winning kids show Cooking With The Gills, tempting fans to swap the city for something calmer long before Jeremy Clarkson did similar with Clarkson’s Farm.Juggling a busy career, fatherhood and livestock on a working farm is no mean feat, but JB wouldn’t change a thing.“For us, it’s all hands on deck. I think with many farms up and down the country, that’s what it’s like. Everyone mucks in, everyone gets their hands dirty, everybody’s involved,” he says.‌But he does think twice when jobs take him away from his beloved brood. He says, “I film Countryfile, Christmas On The Farm, and that often takes me away from home. When I’m considering opportunities, I’m thinking of my family as well.“It’s something my children have grown up with. And Chloe’s very hands-on with the farm. These are mutual decisions that we make year in, year out.”JB recently teamed up with Tesco for its Giant Fruit & Veg Challenge, where children were invited to submit imaginative recipes for the chance to have their dish featured on school menus nationwide. As part of the campaign, he popped down to the lucky winner’s school to bring their dish to life.‌He says, “When it comes to teaching kids about the importance of their food, where it comes from and how to have a healthy balanced diet, as far as I’m concerned you can never start too young.“I do it with my two. We’re lucky to live on a working farm, but not everybody has access to fresh produce on their doorstep. Tesco being able to implement it in over 500 schools up and down the country is a brilliant way to do it.”Meanwhile, JB and his gorgeous family are enjoying summer on their 11-acre farm as they navigate the chaos of family life. “No two days are the same,” he says. “But we love it.
