As another World Cup draws to a close; England may have once again loved and lost, but there’s one sure winner before the final whistle: Wayne Rooney.
It seems like, after leaving a series of dreary-sounding coaching and managing jobs at provincial football clubs to become a £400,000-a-year BBC expert (he reportedly signed a two-year contract on £800k), he’s bounding out of the dugouts and into the studio with a glossier, happier kind of look.
Rooney, who has faced harsh criticism for his appearance throughout his career, has previously been frank about his insecurities. In 2011, he admitted to cosmetic procedures, writing on X: “Just to confirm I have had a hair transplant. I was going bald at 25, why not? I’m delighted with the result.”

And in 2025, after years of being – unfavourably and unfairly – compared to both Shrek and Cristiano Ronaldo, he told Rio Ferdinand’s podcast: “I’m actually very insecure about a number of things. I have been my whole career over my weight, over how I look”.
