The Federal Government has commenced arrangements for the implementation of the prisoner transfer agreement with Ethiopia, including plans to repatriate affected Nigerian inmates to complete their jail terms in Nigeria.
The spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, disclosed this in an interview with Sunday PUNCH.
Ebienfa said the government was working out the modalities for implementing the agreement, including the transfer of the affected prisoners and their allocation to correctional facilities across the country.
“Government is taking steps to work out the details of implementation. This includes moving the effected prisoners to Nigeria and how they will be distributed to various selected correction facilities in Nigeria to serve out their respective prison terms,” he said.
The development follows the prisoner transfer agreement between Nigeria and Ethiopia, which is aimed at enabling eligible Nigerian prisoners serving sentences in Ethiopian prisons to be transferred home to complete their custodial terms in line with the applicable legal framework.
