According to the minister, the inmates received news that they would soon be returned to Nigeria under a newly signed Prisoner Transfer Agreement between Nigeria and the Ethiopian government.
Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has confirmed that four Nigerian inmates imprisoned in Ethiopia have died in custody, while several others are critically ill.
The minister said that the Nigerian Government has finalised arrangements to transfer convicted Nigerians back home from Ethiopia to serve the remainder of their jail terms.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu disclosed this in a statement she shared on X on Saturday, June 13, 2026, following a visit to AbaSamuel Prison in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where Nigerian prisoners are being held.
