England’s 2-1 semifinal loss to Argentina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Atlanta was painful enough. What happened after the final whistle made it worse.
Jude Bellingham, Real Madrid’s midfield engine and England’s most marketable player, was caught on camera slapping Argentine substitute Valentín Barco on the back of the head during post-match celebrations. Bellingham later said the reaction came after Barco directed repeated insults and provocations at him in the closing minutes of the match.
What actually happened on the pitch
The semifinal on July 16 was tense from start to finish. Argentina secured their spot in the World Cup final thanks to a late equalizer from Enzo Fernández, turning a 1-1 affair into a 2-1 Argentine victory that ended England’s tournament run.
After Fernández’s goal, Barco, who had entered as a substitute, reportedly began taunting English players near the touchline. Bellingham was a primary target.
