The Pompeni River Bridge project team, a group of volunteers, worked on the damaged old Blundell Road Bridge to Shallcross in 2022.

A group of volunteers reminisced about the challenges they faced when they looked at April 2022 videos and images of the flood-damaged Hans Dettman Bridge (M34) and Blundell Road Bridge in April 2022.

Hours after the flood waters damaged both Durban bridges and cut off access to Shallcross and surrounding communities, volunteers formed the Pompeni River Bridge project team.

The immediate task was to remove the rubble, rocks, trees, and sand from the bridges and temporarily reconnect the area to Pinetown and Queensburgh.

The bridge crosses the uMhlatuzana River. The route closure affected access to schools, places of employment, healthcare facilities, businesses, and emergency services. Motorists were forced to use alternative routes farther away.
