The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) have defended the President of the NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero, rejecting allegations that he betrayed more than 47,000 former Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) workers during the privatisation of Nigeria's electricity sector.
The labour organisations were reacting to an earlier SaharaReporters report in which a former Public Affairs Manager of the defunct PHCN, Chijioke Igolo, accused Ajaero of collaborating with government officials to deny former electricity workers billions of naira in outstanding entitlements following the 2013 privatisation of the power sector.
In separate statements issued on Friday, the NLC and NUEE described the allegations as false, malicious and politically motivated, insisting that Ajaero was one of the strongest opponents of the power sector privatisation and had consistently fought for workers' welfare before, during and after the exercise.
