The question The average Briton will eat 5,387 slices of pizza in a lifetime. (That’s around 1.5 million calories, but let’s not dwell on that.) The best way to style up your slices – and win at garden parties – is to get a pizza oven for home. But which ones are best? The basics Which? whizzes tested 45 ovens (and ate 150 pizzas in the process). The cheapest was £99 from Vonhaus and the priciest was £995 from DeliVita. The method Which?’s in-house pizzaiolo timed how long it took for each pizza stone to reach 400C (the whopping temperature required for Neapolitan-style pizza), then they cooked three pies (all with the same dough, sauce and cheese) in each oven. When that was done, they assessed the quality of the finished food: whether the crust had bubbled and risen; how melted the cheese had become; if the bases were crisp. Lastly, they considered practical things: portability, stability and how easy each product was to put together. The thing to remember Which? is a not-for-profit organisation, so all the money it makes goes back into making life simpler, fairer and safer for consumers.See the full range of expert reviews at which.co.uk/pizza-ovensBEST VALUEType ElectricSize H 32cm x W 59cm x D 42cmWeight 11.9kgMax pizza size 11.5 inchesWhat works? It’s lightweight (therefore portable) and because it’s electric you just have to plug it into the mains. It heated to 400C in about 15 minutes and has a nifty ‘air frying’ mode, for things like chips. What’s the catch? Pizzas were good rather than great, and it doesn’t use live flames so foodies might disapprove.BEST MID-RANGEType Multi-fuel (wood, charcoal or gas)Size H 75.4cm x W 41.7cm x D 76.1cmWeight 15.5kgMaximum pizza size 12 inchesWhat works? Lots. This is easy to set up and use, is pretty portable and hits 400C in a lightning 13 minutes. Best of all, the food results were first-class: sizzling toppings, crispy bases, and a leopard-spotted crust. What’s the catch? If you want to use gas, you need to buy an attachable Ooni Gas Burner for an extra £90.BEST BLOWOUTType GasSize H 34.2cm x W 48cm x D 56.4cmWeight 21.5kgMaximum pizza size 14 inchesWhat works? This produced tip-top pizzas and was super-easy to operate. Also, the gas burner is to the side (most ovens have it at the back), so you can watch your pizza closely and know just when to rotate it.What’s the catch? The price, obviously. And it takes around 20 minutes to hit 400C – not as rapid as other products.
