In September 2007, a 20-year-old Lionel Messi posed for a UNICEF charity calendar at Camp Nou. In his arms, being bathed for the photoshoot, was a six-month-old baby named Lamine Yamal. Nobody knew the infant would grow up to become one of football’s brightest young stars. Nearly two decades later, the two will face each other as opponents in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final on July 19 in New York, with Argentina taking on Spain.
The photo heard round the world
The original image was captured by photographer Joan Monfort during the UNICEF shoot at FC Barcelona’s iconic stadium. It was meant for a charity calendar. Instead, it became one of the most shared sports photographs in history once Yamal burst onto the scene as a teenager at Barcelona and then with the Spanish national team.
Yamal, now 19, has been open about what this matchup means to him. He previously stated his desire plainly.
“I’d love to face Messi in a World Cup final.”
