Greece’s four systemic banks will donate €160 million to renovate and modernize facilities at three of the country’s largest universities, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced on Friday.
The donation, unveiled at a meeting at the Maximos Mansion with the heads of Alpha Bank, Eurobank, National Bank of Greece and Piraeus Bank, will fund projects at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the National Technical University of Athens.
Planned works include the redevelopment of the University of Athens campus, the renovation of student residences and teaching facilities at the Aristotle University and the restoration of National Technical University’s historic Gini Building.
Mitsotakis said the donation would complement projects already funded through national and European resources, describing it as “a decisive step” towards upgrading public higher education.
Education Minister Sofia Zacharaki said the initiative builds on increased public investment in universities, noting that more than €110 million in operating funding and €120 million for maintenance works had already been allocated this year. She added that the government also aims to create more than 8,500 new student beds over the next five years through public-private partnership projects.
