A city in Moldova has launched a fundraising appeal to cover the costs of repatriating the bodies of three family members killed in a car crash in Halkidiki on Wednesday.
The collision with a fuel tanker claimed the lives of spouses Constantin and Lucia Sirbua and their six-month-old baby. Their eight-year-old daughter survived and remains intubated in intensive care at Ippokratio Hospital in Thessaloniki.
The family’s hometown of Straseni is seeking assistance to return the victims’ remains to Moldova. With the help of the Moldovan embassy, the girl’s aunt was located and informed of the tragedy. She is now travelling to Thessaloniki and has expressed interest in becoming her niece’s guardian.
“A community is defined not only by what it builds in good times, but also by the way it supports its people in the hardest moments,” the municipality said, adding that it trusts “that the residents of Straseni will respond to this call with the same solidarity and humanity that have always united us.”
Doctors said the child has suffered multiple fractures but her hemodynamic, respiratory and neurological condition remain stable.
