Reaction Unit South Africa officers treated the suspect before transporting him to hospital.
A retired Verulam teacher allegedly fought for survival on Tuesday morning when a 28-year-old intruder attempted to rob him at knifepoint at his Southgate home.
The incident escalated quickly, and the pensioner allegedly shot the would-be thief in self-defence.
The suspect was subsequently arrested.
Prem Balram, the head of Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa), said the retired teacher informed them that the same intruder had approached him on Monday and asked for water.
