Some things in life are like boomerangs. Jobs, colleagues, friends and exes. Growing up, people would always say that if it didn’t work the first time, it wouldn’t work the second time.

I think things were a little more black and white back then. I also think that, sometimes, you know what you’re in for the second time around. I say this only because I know people who’ve said exactly that. Second time’s the charm. It’s not just about letting people back into our lives. It’s about going back to the jobs that don’t necessarily make us happy too. Why do we keep going back? Are we hypnotised or under some special kind of mind control?

I just watched the Cape Fear episode where someone is given medication that slowly changes the way they think until, before they know it, they’re completely under someone else’s spell. Boom. Boomerang. We’re also incredibly good at making excuses for returning to the things we know have hurt us and probably won’t be good for us in the long run, or even the short run. People don’t want to be alone. I’m generalising, of course, but maybe we also feel safer with the more familiar than the unknown, even when there are danger, ingozi and gevaar signs all around it, complete with flashing red lights.
