Zurenah Smit, accused of orchestrating her husband's murder, has been ordered by the Western Cape High Court to undergo a 30-day mental evaluation at Valkenberg Psychiatric Facility, following delays in her trial proceedings.
Nearly six months after claiming in court that her deceased husband would be fetching her, accused Zurenah Smit has been admitted to Valkenberg Psychiatric Facility by order of the Western Cape High Court.
On Friday morning, the court heard that a bed space had become available for Smit to be admitted to the facility, where she will undergo her 30-day mental evaluation to determine whether she can follow and participate in court proceedings.
The new development comes after months of delays due to a backlog at the facility.
State prosecutor Renee Uys said: “We have established that Valkenberg is ready and available to have accused number 1 (Smit) assessed. She is going to Valkenberg today (Friday) for her 30-day assessment period.”
