RAF unpaid claims reach R21.7 billion as accident victims wait for payment

The Minister of Transport, Barbara Creecy, has revealed that the embattled Road Accident Fund (RAF) is sitting with more than R21.7 billion

Transport Minister Barbara Creecy has revealed that the embattled Road Accident Fund (RAF) is sitting with more than R21.7 billion in finalised claims that have not yet been paid out to claimants.

Creecy revealed this in a parliamentary reply after ActionSA MP Alan Beesley asked whether the RAF had a complete and accurate record of all finalised claims that remained unpaid.

The Minister said the RAF has a register called the Requested Not Yet Paid (RNYP) Claims Register, which tracks claims that have been approved for payment but have not yet been settled.

According to the register, 37,622 claims worth R21.76 billion were still unpaid as at June 28, 2026. These claims involved 47,949 payment transactions.
