More voters see the EU as a threat than Russia.
Although the next general election is more than a year away, Slovaks are already concerned about how fair it will be. They fear that it will be either manipulated or influenced from abroad. Misleading and manipulative content on the internet generated by AI is the biggest cause for concern. Voters in other countries share similar fears about their own democracies.
These are the results of a survey by the international agency HarrisX for The Eastern Frontier Initiative (TEFI) project, of which Slovakia’s Sme daily, a sister paper of The Slovak Spectator, is a part. The survey with the same questions was conducted in May in a total of 14 countries.
As many as 63 percent of Slovaks are concerned that the governing parties – Smer, Hlas and the Slovak National Party (SNS) – will change the rules in their favour.
However, this is still less than the average of all countries where the survey was conducted. For example, in Ukraine, almost four out of five correspondents share a similar concern. However, the situation is there is somewhat different; the war that Russia has unleashed brings various legal and practical considerations that affect when elections can be called and held.
