Charnelle Arendse , Teacher at Belmor Primary School
Years after leaving Belmore Primary School, one former learner still turns to teacher Charnelle Arendse for advice, support and encouragement.
It is one of the reasons Arendse has been nominated as a Cape Argus Unsung Hero during Mandela month.
According to the nomination, Arendse's support for children extends well beyond the classroom. She runs a Care Closet, where children in need can choose school uniforms and clothing at no cost, helping them come to school with dignity and confidence.
She also leads projects including Sow-a-Sandwich, which provides sandwiches for hungry children, Sanitary Savvy which supplies girls with sanitary products, and Sole Mates, to help provide school shoes to children across Hanover Park.
