In Shauna Bowers’s article about maternity services guidelines, the HSE’s Cliona Murphy is quoted as saying it is “absolute nonsense” to suggest someone might be refused pain relief (“‘I was begging for pain relief but they said I wasn’t dilated enough’: Women query HSE maternity service guidelines,” Health, July 16th). On September 4th, 2020, while in labour with my first child (alone in a room due to Covid-19 restrictions, my husband in a housing estate car park so I could see him out the hospital window), I was also refused pain relief as I “wasn’t dilated enough”.For my two subsequent children, I choose elective c-sections. – Yours, etc,JOAN MULLOY,Leenane,Co Galway.
