Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and the African Democratic Congress have mourned the death of Mrs Mary Amaechi, the mother of the party’s Vice-Presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi.
Amaechi’s media office, in a statement on Thursday, announced that the family matriarch died peacefully at the age of 89.
The statement announcing the death read, “The beloved mother of Rt Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, Vice-Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Mrs Mary Amaechi, departed peacefully on Thursday, July 16, 2026. She was 89.”
The family said details of the funeral arrangements would be announced at a later date.
Following Mr Amaechi’s demise, Atiku, in a condolence message shared on his verified social media handles, described the deceased as a woman who lived an exemplary Christian life marked by devotion and selfless service to her community.
