Petrol and diesel prices fell between May and June, according to the latest Stats NZ figures.Petrol prices were down 4.2 percent, while diesel prices decreased 12.1 percent."Fuel prices remained high in June but decreased for a second consecutive month, following increases in March and April," prices and deflators spokesperson Nicola Growden said.In the 12 months to June 2026, prices for these two fuel types increased - petrol was up 23.6 percent and diesel up 57.1 percent.Food prices increased 0.6 percent between May and June 2026, with fruit and vegetables the biggest contributors.Price increases were recorded for tomatoes, boxed chocolates, cucumbers and capsicums, while the price of avocados, chocolate blocks and chicken pieces (excluding chicken breasts) decreased over that period.Overall food prices increased 2.5 percent in the 12 months to June, following a 3.2 percent increase in the 12 months to May 2026.Meat, poultry and fish were the biggest contributors to the price increase in the last 12 months, followed by ready-to-eat food and restaurant meals.The previous partial inflation data from Stats NZ showed food prices lifted 1 percent between April and May, with the grocery food group the biggest contributed followed by fruit and vegetables.The May Stats NZ figures also confirmed steep rises for petrol and diesel as the Middle East conflict broke out, leading to the closing of the Strait of Hormuz.That led to increases in the price of fuel and an increase in the price of airfares.
