They could not be saved.The cause of the accident is still unclear, with the area cordoned off by police and privacy screens in place.It is operated by Harzturm GmbH, which has not commented yet on the incident but a statement on its website saying the tower "will be closed all day on July 17, 2026".The famous lookout tower is in Torfhaus, the highest village in Germany's Harz Mountains, and it is claimed to be the tallest observation tower in the country after being opened to the public in 2024.Made of wood and steel, it cost around €10m to build and received state funding.
