MANILA, Philippines — Conservation International (CI) Philippines and a United Nations project official have mourned the death of Dr. Kent Carpenter, a pioneering marine scientist whose research helped transform the understanding and conservation of marine biodiversity in the Philippines and worldwide.
In a statement, CI-Philippines said Carpenter played a key role in drawing international attention to the country’s rich but vulnerable marine ecosystems, with his scientific work serving as the foundation for several major conservation initiatives.
Romeo Trono, a program management specialist at the United Nations Office for Project Services and Philippine national coordinator of the South China Sea Strategic Action Program Project, said Carpenter’s death left him in “shock and sorrow.”
“It is a tragedy that feels entirely senseless and unjust,” Trono said. “Kent was a man of remarkable kindness — a dedicated marine scientist who carried himself with integrity.”
