NewsWorld newsAccidentsThe pupil, 17, was snorkelling in Malawi while on a trip with Hampton School when he vanished, the Malawi Police Service said18:38, 16 Jul 2026Updated 18:51, 16 Jul 2026A 17-year-old pupil from a school in London has died while snorkelling on a trip to Malawi.‌Malawi Police Service (MPS) named the boy as Eugene Enoch Kwon, who attended Hampton School in south-west London.‌Pupils from the school had been snorkelling in Lake Malawi in Cape Maclear, Monkey Bay, on Tuesday when he vanished.‌The teenager was later found underwater by divers who carried out an extensive search of the lake. He was then rushed to Monkey Bay Community Hospital for treatment but tragically died from suffocation due to drowning, police said.Superintendent Patrick Mussa, from the Eastern Region Police Headquarters from the Malawi Police Service, said Eugene's disappearance triggered an "immediate search operation."‌He added: "After an extensive search, divers located him underwater."Police in the Eastern Region have since expressed their condolences to the bereaved family, while investigations into the incident continue."Hampton School, a private school for boys in Richmond upon Thames, confirmed one of its students had died on the camping trip.Article continues belowA spokesperson said: "Our thoughts, love and deepest sympathies are with the pupil's family and loved ones at this unimaginably difficult time."At present, our focus is supporting the pupil's family and everyone affected within our school community."This is a Breaking News story.
