Former Springbok hooker Bismarck du Plessis believes the depth Rassie Erasmus has built within the national side is unlike anything he has seen, with the world champions continuing to produce results despite constant changes to their matchday squads.
Under Erasmus, the Boks have become known for their player rotations but without sacrificing high standards. It’s a current characteristic that has allowed Erasmus to use newcomers while South Africa maintains the same intensity and physicality in Tests.
This weekend, when they face Wales at Kings Park in Durban (5.40pm kick-off), four players will make their debut. It’s the final Nations Championship match and the Boks will aim to remain unbeaten.
Du Plessis admitted he has been particularly impressed by utility front-ranker Jan-Hendrik Wessels, who is seamlessly switching between loosehead prop and hooker despite the different technical demands of the positions.
