The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) will soon allow taxpayers to see the information the tax department has received from abroad regarding their foreign assets and incomes, sources in the CBDT have said.India receives information from more than 100 countries under the Automatic Exchange of Information (AEOI) framework. This information can include details relating to foreign bank accounts, custodial accounts, certain financial investments, interest, dividends and other specified financial income. “As of now, information, as received, pertaining to calendar years 2022, 2023 and 2024 has been displayed in the Annual Information Statement (AIS) on the Income Tax e-Filing portal,” a source in the CBDT said. “Further, information for 2025 will be displayed in the AIS once it is received in the month of September or October 2026.”The move is being done to enhance taxpayer services and promote voluntary tax compliance, the official added. He added that the information being made available on the portal only reflects the information that the CBDT has received from its partner jurisdictions, and isn’t an exhaustive list. “Taxpayers are, therefore, required to correctly and completely report all foreign assets and foreign source income in their Income-tax Return, irrespective of whether such assets or income are reflected in AIS,” he said.
