Andhra Pradesh recorded its highest-ever electricity consumption for the month of July with the daily energy demand touching 285 Million Units (MU) on July 15 due to the El Nino-induced weather conditions, and it reflected a significant increase in power requirement across all consumer categories, according to senior officials of the Energy Department.They told Special Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand in a review meeting through video-conference on power supply on Thursday that the El Niño was impacting weather patterns, as a result of which the temperatures had been persistently high.Mr. Vijayanand directed the power utilities to make advance arrangements to meet the anticipated demand in August and September, and to procure additional power through exchanges and the Term-Ahead Market, whenever necessary, to ensure uninterrupted and reliable power supply to the consumers.He also directed the AP-Genco to maintain adequate coal stocks at all the thermal generating stations to ensure sustained power generation during periods of peak demand, and emphasised the importance of close coordination among the AP State Load Dispatch Centre, the AP-Genco, the AP-Transco, the AP Power Coordination Committee, and the DISCOMs for continuous monitoring of demand, resource availability, transmission system readiness and contingency planning.CMDs of DISCOMs Lotheti Siva Sankar, I.
