A 21-year-old Gugulethu woman receives R4.7 million in compensation from the Road Accident Fund after suffering severe injuries in a hit-and-run accident.

A 21-year-old Gugulethu woman receiveed a R4.7 million in compensation from the Road Accident Fund (RAF) after a hit-and-run accident left her with lifelong injuries.

The woman, who was a 16 year old school pupil at the time of the accident, dreamt that she would in the future qualify as a school teacher.

In his judgment, Acting Judge of the Western Cape High Court, Fareed Moosa, noted that due to her accident-related injuries, the woman’s dream of becoming a foundation-phase teacher was dashed.

Judgment details noted that while she was a pedestrian on a pavement at the NY 3A Road in Gugulethu, she was hit by a Quantum van. Immediately after the accident, the vehicle’s unidentified driver fled the scene.
