Two airstrikes hit the area surrounding Khondab, Iran, at approximately 3:30 a.m. local time early Thursday, targeting a region that sits uncomfortably close to one of the country’s most sensitive nuclear infrastructure sites. The strikes are part of a broader pattern of military engagement with Iranian nuclear-related facilities that has been building across 2025 and 2026.
What happened and why Khondab matters
Khondab is home to the IR-40 heavy water research reactor, a facility that has drawn sustained international scrutiny over its potential role in weapons-grade plutonium production.
Similar strikes occurred in March 2026 and as far back as June 2025, establishing a pattern of recurring engagement with the site.
The International Atomic Energy Agency previously assessed that no declared nuclear materials were present at the facility during comparable attacks, which has so far kept immediate radiation concerns off the table.
