Every Greek company that secures a position in the world’s most demanding markets does not merely strengthen itself, it strengthens Greece as well, Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis said during his address on Tuesday at the 12th MAC Gala.

The annual awards event honors Greece’s most admired companies, and is jointly organized by Forward Media, Fortune Greece and KPMG.

He added that the major challenge of the coming decade is “to create ever more Greek businesses that will not be content with leading the domestic market, but will possess the scale, international outlook and confidence to compete on equal terms in the most demanding markets around the globe.”

Pierrakakis also stressed that “investing in people is perhaps the smartest business strategy. Invest in your employees. Invest in their skills and reward their efforts. Higher wages are not merely a cost. They are an investment in productivity, commitment and the long-term competitiveness of the business itself.”

According to the minister, for many years the overriding objective was for “the Greek economy to stand firmly on its own feet once again,” relying increasingly on productivity, innovation, investment, exports and businesses capable of achieving scale and establishing a strong international presence.
