Authorities in Central Florida are investigating after a 4-year-old boy shot and killed his 2-year-old relative, officials announced.The tragic shooting involved a Georgia family and took place at an apartment complex in Kissimmee on Sunday, July 12, Osceola County Sheriff Chris Blackmon said during a Monday news conference.The city is just south of Orlando.According to a preliminary investigation, the children, both boys, had just arrived at a rental home with their family and were left alone in a vehicle for an unknown period.About 4 p.m. ET, Blackmon said, the 4-year-old found an unsecured firearm in the vehicle, picked it up and fired it, striking the toddler."It's literally laying out by itself, so it's easy to grab, and he pulled the trigger and you can't recall that," Blackmon said.The child was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, the sheriff said.No other injuries were reported.Was anyone arrested in Kissimmee child shooting death?USA TODAY is not naming the children involved because they are minors.The sheriff said it was working with the local Medical Examiner's Office and the Department of Children's Services to determine whether charges would be filed in the case.As of Wednesday, July 15, it was not immediately known whether anyone had been arrested in the child's death.USA TODAY has reached out to the sheriff's office for more information.Natalie Neysa Alund is a senior reporter for USA TODAY.
