Social media platform avoids risk of daily penalties under the bloc's Digital Services Act
The European Commission has accepted a series of proposed changes by Elon Musk’s social media platform X, meaning the company will avoid daily fines under the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA).
X’s offer of operational tweaks followed enforcement by the Commission last December, when the platform was fined €120 million under the DSA for a number of breaches – including transparency issues related to its ads repository and data access for researchers. That decision marked the first Commission penalty issued under the bloc’s online governance rulebook.
On Wednesday, the EU’s executive said X had agreed to make a series of changes aimed at improving the usability of its ad repository and establishing a proper screening process for researchers, thereby meeting DSA criteria.
The EU’s executive has given X six months to implement these fixes, though it warned it will “closely” monitor X’s application of the changes.
