The surgeons at CARE Hospitals, Visakhapatnam successfully performed a robotic radical surgery for hilar cholangiocarcinoma, commonly known as a Klatskin tumour. The rare malignancy, located at the critical junction of bile ducts near the liver, presents immense surgical challenges due to its proximity to vital blood vessels. The procedure was performed on a 73-year-old male present with jaundice, weight loss, and pruritus. To navigate the complex anatomical landscape, the surgical team utilised the ‘da Vinci Surgical System’, which provided superior visualisation and precision. The surgery involved the radical excision of the tumour and affected bile ducts, followed by intricate reconstruction to restore biliary drainage.Dr. Biswabasu Das, Clinical Director of Surgical Gastroenterology & Robotic Surgery, noted that the minimally invasive approach facilitated meticulous dissection in a confined space. Following a smooth recovery, the patient was discharged on the seventh day. Mr. G. Sukesh Reddy, COO, stated that the achievement underscores the hospital’s commitment to providing sophisticated, specialised care to the region’s patients. Published - July 15, 2026 08:27 pm IST
