The Kremlin on Wednesday dismissed Lithuanian claims that Russia could be planning attacks on critical infrastructure in Poland or the Baltic states, describing the allegations as an attempt to justify further NATO militarisation in the region.
The comments came after Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda said Tuesday that intelligence information supported recent Western media reports that Russia could stage provocations in the Baltic states and Poland to test NATO’s unity.
Nausėda said the intelligence pointed to the possibility of limited, targeted attacks against critical infrastructure using both conventional and nonconventional means, although he said no specific locations or timing had been identified.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov rejected the claims.
“This is simply the latest batch of scare stories designed to continue brainwashing the population and preparing it for further militarisation,” Peskov told reporters, according to Reuters.
