The Ministry of Heavy Industries has invited global bids to set up advanced battery manufacturing plants with a total capacity of 10 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in India under the government’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) batteries. These batteries will be used for grid-scale energy storage, helping store electricity generated from renewable sources such as solar and wind.In 2021, the Centre approved an ₹18,100-crore PLI scheme to build 50 GWh of battery manufacturing capacity in India. Of this, 40 GWh has already been allocated to domestic manufacturers, with the remaining 10 GWh now open for bidding. The objective of the scheme is to reduce India’s dependence on imported ACCs by strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities and incentivising large domestic and international players to establish a globally competitive ACC battery-manufacturing ecosystem in the country.
