AN elderly woman was killed after she was struck by a vehicle in Marabella yesterday.Sixty-five-year-old Jameella Basrally, of Choon Street, Soledad West in Claxton Bay, was pronounced dead at hospital. Basrally was knocked down around 2.30 p.m. near the corner of Market Street and Southern Main Road, in front of the JTA Shopping Complex.A police report stated that the driver of a van that struck the pensioner was headed south on the Southern Main Road. The driver told the police his vehicle was in the left lane when he swerved to avoid a collision with another vehicle, but then struck the elderly woman, who was standing on the side of the roadway.She was taken by ambulance to the San Fernando General Hospital (SFGH), where she died while receiving emergency treatment.Video footage of the aftermath of the collision, which circulated widely on social media, showed the injured woman lying motionless on the pavement, bleeding from her injuries as a crowd gathered around her.In one of the clips, a man who identified himself as the relative of the victim is seen visibly distressed and shouting at onlookers to stop filming.“I don’t want no recording!” he shouted repeatedly, as several people stood nearby with their mobile phones.A woman in the crowd challenged the onlookers, asking whether anyone was actually helping the victim instead of recording.Another clip showed a bystander speaking with emergency services over the phone, informing the operator that the victim was a 65-year-old woman and requesting urgent medical assistance.Marabella police officers responded to the scene and coordinated the emergency response before the victim was transported to the SFGH by an Emergency Health Services ambulance. The vehicle that struck Basrally was towed to the Marabella Police Station.Cpl Dabee is continuing investigations.
