The latest heatwave to grip France is slowly receding from the west, with all 26 red alerts that were in place now downgraded to orange – but the dramatic weather continues over large parts of France as storms take over.

Despite the relaxation of weather warnings, the high temperatures have not gone away.

A total 69 départements remain under orange warnings, the second highest level, for heat on Wednesday, while 11 in the east are on orange alert for storms.

Météo-France says that “the mass of very hot air that has been stagnating over the country for several days will begin to retreat from the west, under the influence of more pronounced thunderstorms during Wednesday”.

Cooler air is moving in from the west and north, and temperatures will drop, particularly north of the Loire River, according to Météo-France.
