France has extended the 'red' weather warnings going into Tuesday as the heatwave is set to continue and become even more severe.

On Monday, 49 départements in France - just over half the country - were placed on red alert for extreme temperatures, the highest number of départements ever to be placed on the highest alert level.

That record lasted just 24 hours, and on Tuesday Météo France has extended the red alert warnings to 54 départements.
