Sinothando Mgangala and Bongolethu Ncandana who were both 17-years-old died at the Enyobeni tarven disaster in 2022
Four years after the Enyobeni Tavern tragedy claimed the lives of 21 teenagers, bereaved parents hope the East London Regional Court's verdict will finally pave the way for accountability and closure.
After a lengthy inquest into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, Magistrate Mvuselelo Malindi last week found former Enyobeni Tavern owner Siyakhangela Ndevu and manager Vuyokazi Ndevu liable for the tragedy, ruling that they had acted with gross negligence by failing to comply with the Liquor Act.
The court also found SAPS Sergeant Tabisa Kondile grossly negligent for failing to act on complaints about the tavern's alleged contravention of liquor trading laws a month before the tragedy.
