As dawn broke on 26 June 2022, tragedy struck the Enyobeni Tavern in Kugompo City, Eastern Cape, where 21 lives were lost during a jubilant hlanjwa iphepha ('pens down') celebration marking the end of school exams.
Four others suffered injuries amid the chaos. An inquest sought to uncover who bore criminal responsibility for the heartbreaking loss of life.
More than 30 witnesses stepped forward to share their accounts during the proceedings.
