The diplomatic mission shared on its social media a mock “internal memo” addressed to its communications officer

The United Kingdom's embassy in Buenos Aires posted a humorous message ahead of the 2026 World Cup semifinal between Argentina and England, played on Wednesday in Atlanta, in an attempt to ease the mood before a match loaded with historical connotations.

The diplomatic mission shared on its social media a mock “internal memo” addressed to its communications officer, with instructions on how to react depending on the result. “I know you're all waiting for us to post something about what everyone's thinking, but they didn't make it easy for me,” wrote the person in charge of the official accounts, before reproducing the text.

The document set out two scenarios. In the event of an English win, the instruction was to “celebrate elegantly.” If Argentina won, it read: “congratulate the winner, wish them the best of success in the final, and don't go out denouncing nonexistent conspiracies.” The message added that the use of memes was allowed “with tact” and quoted an English expression, “the oven is not ready for buns,” equivalent to an Argentine idiom used at moments of irritation.
