Greece has many recognisable stretches of coastline, from Shipwreck Beach on the Ionian island of Zakynthos (Zante) to the swirling pink-and-white sand of Crete’s Balos Beach. But the drop-dead gorgeous shoreline below me is not yet as well-known – at least among British holidaymakers.
It’s a perfect, bone-white curve backed by rolling dunes that separate the sea from a vast lagoon that’s dotted with flamingos.
Rocky headlands at both ends sharply truncate the crescent of sand giving rise to the nickname Omega beach on account of the Greek letter that the sand and rocky headland resemble from above. But its proper name is Voidokilia, a bit of a mouthful, perhaps, yet one that may soon be spoken more frequently.

It appears in The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan’s latest film, which is released this week. With a cast including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway and Zendaya, it’s a retelling of Homer’s poem about the Greek king Odysseus’s long journey home from the Trojan War.
