ActionSA and the DA are demanding clarity and accountability from Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie regarding the hefty R31 million spent on FIFA World Cup initiatives.
ActionSA and the Democratic Alliance (DA) are ramping up pressure on Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie, demanding that he justify the R31 million spent on the FIFA World Cup 2026 and reveal a full breakdown of every cent of taxpayer money.
The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture is now squarely in the spotlight, facing tough questions after spending nearly R31 million on its delegation and programmes tied to the World Cup.
According to McKenzie’s parliamentary reply, the spending included international travel, accommodation, hospitality suites, match tickets, an exhibition match and other nation-branding initiatives.
ActionSA said that while promoting South Africa internationally has its benefits, taxpayers are right to ask if R31 million is justified when local sports facilities are poor, and youth infrastructure is ignored.
