A London-based nonprofit has formally asked the International Olympic Committee to investigate whether FIFA President Gianni Infantino violated political neutrality rules by allegedly caving to pressure from US President Donald Trump. The complaint, filed with the IOC Ethics Commission on July 14, centers on the reversal of American striker Folarin Balogun’s one-match World Cup suspension, a decision that has become one of the most politically charged moments in recent sports governance history.
What happened with Balogun
After Balogun received a red card in a group-stage match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee initially imposed a standard one-match suspension. The ban was later suspended for a one-year probationary period.
President Trump publicly confirmed on Truth Social that he had personally requested a review of the ban. The suspension was subsequently reversed, marking the first time such a reversal had occurred since 1962.
FairSquare, the organization behind the complaint, argues that Infantino’s involvement in facilitating this reversal represents a clear breach of the Olympic Charter’s political neutrality requirements. Their filing outlines five specific breaches related to political neutrality, with claims of additional serious violations beyond those five.
