Siam Society is holding a study trip to explore the cultural legacy of Thailand's Deep South in Pattani and Narathiwat from Aug 14-16. This is a rare opportunity to gain a deeper appreciation of the history, heritage and cultural richness of the two provinces that occupy a unique position at the crossroads of the Thai, Malay, Islamic, Chinese and wider maritime worlds.
For centuries, these lands formed part of a vibrant network of trade and cultural exchange linking the kingdoms of mainland Southeast Asia with the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea.
Their ports welcomed merchants, scholars, pilgrims and travellers from distant shores, leaving a remarkable legacy that continues to shape the region's distinctive identity today.
The upcoming trip will begin at Yarang Ancient City, widely believed to be associated with the ancient kingdom of Langkasuka, one of the earliest and most influential centres of civilisation in the Malay Peninsula.
From these archaeological remains, participants trace the region's evolution through the rise of the Patani Sultanate, whose legacy is reflected in magnificent mosques, historic palaces, traditional Malay architecture and enduring artistic traditions.
