Cyprus government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis commented on a report by the Independent about ideas being developed by UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin to help bridge differences in the Cyprus dispute.

The report said the ideas are not an official UN proposal. Letymbiotis said any solution other than a bicommunal, bizonal federation with political equality, as set out in UN Security Council resolutions, falls outside the UN secretary-general’s mandate and the international community’s approach.

A requirement remains for an informal multilateral meeting: “the constructive stance, the sincere political will from Turkey.”

He welcomed the appointment of Raffaele Fitto as EU envoy for Cyprus issues.
